Obituary for Harriet Elise "Lee" Morehouse

Print
Lee Morehouse, 93, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Quarry Hill in Camden on January 3, 2017. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Christine Anderson-Morehouse and their son, Tucker Morehouse; grandsons Tim (wife Leda), Sam, James, Micah Conkling and Parker Taylor; their parents, Paige Parker and Philip Conkling; as well as nieces Barbara Harris, Meredith Elcome, Wendy Harris and nephew William Elcome. She is predeceased by daughters Jamien and Marcy and husband, Richard “Dick” Morehouse.

Lee enjoyed a wonderful childhood in Westfield, New Jersey surrounded by a loving family and many animals. She earned a B.A. from Middlebury College in 1945 and spoke often of the unusual wartime circumstances surrounding her attendance. She met husband, Dick, in college then moved with him to Cambridge, Massachusetts where she worked as a radiology technician and educator of young children and college students studying to become teachers, then at her local Council on Aging.

Lee and Dick joined a group of fellow Bauhaus architects in settling an intentional community, Six Moon Hill, in Lexington, Mass where families shared common land while each enjoying the comfort of their own “modern” homes. A primary tenet of Bauhaus was the tight integration of person, family and community. She and Dick embraced that philosophy with enthusiasm, hosting neighborhood activities while raising their children. In 1952, together with other Moon Hill neighbors, Lee and family began vacationing on the island of Vinalhaven and in 1968, finally took the plunge and purchased their beloved place at the head of Carvers Harbor: the 12-years-abandoned “Rockaway Inn”. Lee organized her visiting family and friends (as many as 25 overnight) in bringing this ten-bedroom home back to its stately beauty. Summering on Vinalhaven was a highlight of Lee’s life, where she loved being surrounded by family and friends, serving on the board of the Vinalhaven Land Trust, singing at the Union Church and supporting many island endeavors.

The Morehouse family extends profound gratitude to the staff and residents of Quarry Hill who surrounded Lee with love right up to the end. A small memorial celebration will be held at Quarry Hill. Friends who wish to may make a donation in her memory to Vinalhaven Eldercare Services, PO Box 624, Vinalhaven, ME 04863. Finally, Lee’s parting wish is that we all continue to see the good in each other and stay involved with our communities.
