HOPE – Elizabeth G. Shaw, 77, died Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at Quarry Hill in Camden.
Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, September 23, 1939, she was the daughter of John A. and Dorothy F. Beckwith Witham. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Stoughton, where she continued her education and was a 1957 graduate of Stoughton High School.
While in high school she met the love of her life, Robert W. Shaw. They courted all through their high school years and were married October 9, 1960. Shortly thereafter they moved to Hyannis and later to Yarmouth, Massachusetts. In 1969 they completed construction of their new home in Yarmouth Port. While raising her children, Betty worked more than 15 years at Angelo’s Supermarket in South Yarmouth.
In 1982, the Shaw family moved to Hope, where they purchased ‘Fuller’s Trading Post’ in South Hope and shortly thereafter the former ‘Wilson’s Market’ on Route 90, in Rockport. They renamed that store ‘Bob’s Variety’.
Betty worked with her husband in support of the stores doing the banking. During that same period in 1993, she became a caregiver to her newborn granddaughter.
She was as member of the Midcoast Ladies Club
For several years, Betty and Bob wintered in Florida, and for the 12 years prior to Bob’s passing in 2010, at High Banks Campground in DeBary.
In January of 2014, Betty moved to Bartlett Woods in Rockland, where she enjoyed the friendships she made with many of her neighbors.
More than anything, Betty loved her family and enjoyed doting over her grandchildren, and took great pride in her two great-grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her children, Robert W. Shaw, Jr. and his wife Dianne of Union, Donna M. Shaw of Brunswick; two grandchildren, Deanna Hyvarinen and her husband Ethan, Nicole Wincapaw and her boyfriend Stephen Smith all of Hope; two great-grandchildren, Micah Hyvarinen and Raevyn Hyvarinen; two siblings, Stephen M. Witham of Sabattus, and Mary P. Yoder of Brewer, sisters-in-law, Doris Shaw of New Hampshire and Maragret Shaw of Virginia, along with many nieces and nephews, as well as several extended family members.
