UNION – Arthur Harry Steeves, Jr., 85, died October 4, 2017 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born June 22, 1932 in Sangerville, a son of Arthur Harry and Leona (Trafton) Steeves, Sr. He attended local schools and graduated from Clinton High School. Arthur met and married the former Jill Baughman. Mrs. Steeves died in 2005.

Arthur worked for a brief time at Stearns Clothing Store and Belfast Poultry, before beginning employment with the Maine Department of Agriculture as a food inspector. In 1981 he moved with his wife to Oklahoma to work for the USDA in Jay, OK and in 1990 was relocated to Hershey, PA. Following his retirement in 1994, the Steeves returned to Maine, residing in Union since that time.

Active in the Masonic Lodge all his adult life, at the time of his death, Arthur was a member of the Union Lodge of Masons where he received a 60+ year membership pin. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had many secret fishing locations that had landed him some impressive fish over the years. His greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Shane and his wife Lisa Steeves of Nobleboro, Shawn and his wife Kellie Steeves of Oscoda, MI, two brothers, Malcolm and his wife Linda Steeves of Bangor, Richard Steeves of Florida, two sisters, Caroline “Fuffy” Chapel of VA, Susan Steeves of NC, six grandchildren, Nathan, Zachary, Noah, Mirisea, Jessie, and Jayden, two great-grandchildren, Bobby and Savannah as well as many nieces and nephews.

Services will be will be announced in the summer of 2018 at the Masonic Hall in Union. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Arthur’s memory to the Union Masonic Lodge #31, P.O. Box 110, Union, ME 04862. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.
