SPRUCE HEAD – Darrel C. Elwell, Sr., 81, died peacefully, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Windward Gardens in Camden.

Born in East Millinocket, Darrell moved with his family at a young age to St. George. Growing up on Hewitt’s Island and Spruce Head, he was a graduate of St. George High School.

Mr. Elwell has always loved the water and worked on or around it his entire life. When his children were young, he served as a policeman in the Rockland area. Later he also bought and sold lobsters as well as driving a seafood truck. Later in life he worked as a night watchman at the wharf at Atwood’s Lobster until his retirement.

An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, canoeing and camping. He spent many hours teaching his daughter how to be a good fisherman and passed along his love of the outdoors. She remembers him as ‘quite a character’.

Predeceased by a brother Herbert Elwell, Jr.; Mr. Elwell is survived by his son Darrel C. Elwell, Jr. and his wife Donna of McNeal, AZ; his daughters, Daphne Reynolds and her husband Walter of Spruce Head, Kelly Del Frate and her husband Robert of Tenants Harbor; a brother Kenneth Elwell, Sr. and his wife Carolyn ‘Carrie’ of St. George; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a large and loving extended family.

Mr. Elwell’s family has chosen to remember his life privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George Ambulance and Fire Fighters Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, Maine 04860.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
