Obituary for Elizabeth E. Biddle

Elizabeth E. Biddle
ROCKPORT - Elizabeth Elaine Biddle gently passed early in the morning of May 30, 2011, in the comfort of her home, her journey brought to a tender conclusion by a cocoon of warm love spun by numerous family and friends, and made possible by the compassionate care provided by the hospice staff of Kno-Wal-Lin.
Elizabeth was born November 9, 1959 in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the youngest of the four children of Eugene Dorr Biddle and Evelyn Anne Burr. Elizabeth attended St. Agnes School in Alexandria Virginia, graduating in 1977, then went on to receive a degree in Women's Studies from Amherst College in Amherst MA in 1983. She went on to receive a law degree from the University of Maine Law School in 1991.
She worked with a local Rockland law firm after graduating, then started her own practice in 1999. She concentrated on Family Law matters and real estate and performed a great deal of pro bono and reduced fee work for non-profit organizations. Among such organizations represented were the Knox Museum, the Lubec Memorial Library, the Community School, and Ashwood School. She served on the Rockport Planning Board and was a long standing member of the Vestry of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Rockland.
Volunteer work with community organizations was also of great interest to her, and she served on the boards of several such organizations, including Ashwood School, Bay Chamber Concerts and Pen Bay Medical Center. Before starting law school she was active over the years in several capacities at the Farnsworth Museum, held jobs waitressing and working as a schooner cook. She was a lifelong avid sailor, and enjoyed making boat deliveries on several occasions with friends and family. She acquired her love of the water from childhood summers spent with her older cousins Marsha and Bob Perry on Cape Cod. It was her love of sailing that brought her to this area during her college years, where she became a cook on the schooner Mattie (now the Grace Bailey).
She was the long-time director of ParentWorks, a parent education organization based in Rockland. It combined her passion for non-profit work with her love of parenting. She was a mother of great energy and devotion, adored by her two children that survive her, Rebecca Cox, 10, and Xiara Cox, 5. She is also survived and will be greatly missed by her husband Joseph Cox of Rockport; sister Barbara Biddle of Camden, and brothers, Geoff Biddle of Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Eugene Biddle of Florida. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who have shared her love over the years.
A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2011 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 11 White Street, Rockland. A reception will be held immediately following at 104 Limerock, Burpee Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Homes reception facility.
In accordance with Elizabeth's wishes, gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to either ParentWorks at PO Box 702, Rockland ME 04856, or St. Peter's Church, 11 White St. Rockland ME 04841.
