CLARK ISLAND - Catheryn M. Mudgett, 97, died peacefully, surrounded by family, Friday, June 8, 2018 at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Cassie Caven was born at Clark Island, April 23, 1921, the daughter of William John and Elizabeth Johnson Caven. Educated in Clark Island Schools, she was 1939 graduate of St. George High School.

Following high school, Catheryn moved to South Portland at the onset of World War II. There she worked at the South Portland Shipyard, building Liberty Ships. While working at the shipyard, she met her future husband, Claude Mudgett, at the Union Train Station. The two were married on May 11, 1946.

Returning to Clark Island during the early years of her marriage, she drove a mail delivery route in the Clark Island District of St. George. Later she worked for a few years at Sylvania’s in Waldoboro and, in the late 1960’s drove a school bus in St. George.

Her most fulfilling experience has been as a Planner. Catheryn served several years as Chairperson of the St. George Planning Board. She also served on the Mid-Coast Planning Commission, many of those years as Chairperson. Passionate about her involvement with the planning commission, she helped write much of the shoreline ordinance now in existence.

In her downtime, Catheryn enjoyed making Christmas wreaths, collecting the brush with her children from her own property. She was an avid sailor, and was instrumental in forming a small sailing club in Rockland, and was also a member of Camden Yacht Club. She loved the sea, and could often be seen beach-combing near her beloved home. When sitting quietly, she enjoyed knitting and completing crossword puzzles. She loved to bake, especially blueberry pies for her family, and took great joy in cookouts with her family. She will be sadly missed.

Predeceased by her husband in 2002; her siblings, Ralph Caven, Frances Hagen, and Doris Rush; a son-in-law, Ronnie Myers, and a granddaughter Lacey Fournier; Catheryn is survived by her children, Elizabeth Myers, Jeffrey Mudgett, Christopher Mudgett and his wife Cynthia all of Spruce Head; a step-son, Lyndol Mudgett of Connecticut; one cousin, Alice Fowlie of Glen Cove; three nieces; and one nephew as well as 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a Celebration of Her Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 15, 2018.
