Obituary for Thomas A. "Tom" Fifield

Print
AUGUTSA – Thomas A. Fifield, 48, died Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Maine Medical Center in Portland surrounded by his family following a heart attack. Tom was born in Rockland, Maine on October 7, 1970, the son of Jean Marie Russell and Gilbert T. Fifield. Tom grew up in the Camden area with his father Gilbert and mother Jeanne E. Fifield along with his sister Jennifer Fifield and brothers John, Daniel, and Nathan Gilbert.

Tom’s first true love was sports and he will always be remembered for his conquests on the basketball court having scored 1,000 points while playing for Camden-Rockport High School. Following graduation from high school he attended the University of Maine in Farmington where he earned a B.S. in Education. Following graduation he remained active in sports as a baseball umpire and basketball coach and official. He was involved with teams at all levels coaching AAU basketball, assisting with UMaine Farmington basketball, Dirigo boys’ and girls’ basketball, and coaching at Cony High. Tom also coached baseball at Mt. Blue High School.

Tom was a member of the IAABO Board 20 as an official and officiated basketball for 17 years. He belonged to the Central Maine Board of Approved Baseball Umpires for 11 years and joined the Kennebec-Somerset Umpire Association in 2007 where he served through 2017. He also belonged to CBUA-Maine as a college baseball umpire. Tom enjoyed officiating at all levels, but especially enjoyed his time serving as an umpire at Portland Sea Dogs games.

The only thing Tom loved more than sports, including his beloved Boston Red Sox and Celtics and, in a world full of Patriots fans, the Miami Dolphins, was his family and friends. There was nothing more important to Tom than his two children, Isabelle Grace and Jacob Thomas. They were his whole world and he put them above all else. It would have been impossible for him to have been more proud of both of his children or for him to have loved them more.

Tom will be greatly missed by his innumerable friends and cousins, as well as his work family at Rockland Ford. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Jean Marie Russell and is survived by his parents Jeanne and Gil Fifield, sister Jennifer Fifield and her partner Tobey Young, and brothers John Gilbert and his partner Brenda Bagley; Daniel Gilbert and his partner Heather Pendleton; Nathan Gilbert and his partner Diane Sturgeon as well as aunts Ruthie Smith, Cathy Russell and Linda Wheeler and her husband Peter; uncles John Russell, David Russell, Dwight Fifield and his wife B.J.; Richard “Moe” Fifield and his wife Cathy; Dave Fifield and his wife Donna, and Bruce Fifield and his wife Linda.

He leaves behind nieces Sierra Gilbert, Carly Gilbert, Sydney Gilbert, and Josie Jean Marie Pendleton as well as his nephews Jared Gilbert, Owen Pendleton, and Zachary Gilbert, and a special cousin Miranda Jandreau. He will be sorely missed by his “best friend in the whole wide world”, his “Sunshine” Jen Costa, and his close friend Jeff Kinney who provided great support to the family in Tom’s final days.

Tom will forever be watching over his true treasures, his daughter Isabelle Grace Fifield and Jacob Thomas Fifield.

A memorial gathering of love and support will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Thomas A. Fifield Educational Fund, C/O James Brannan, Esq., PO Box 1021, Rockland, ME 04841.
